Career Day

We welcomed a number professionals from various fields for our first ever Career Day on 20 May!

These included two police constables, a paramedic, a bank fraud analyst, a TfL manager, a multi-trade engineer, and a child & adolescent mental health psychologist. Hounslow Police Constables (PCs) Storey and Shaw, along with London Ambulance Service (LAS) paramedic Ness Storey, were invited by Deputy Headteacher and SENDCo Ms Storey to attend the school’s Career Day.

During the assembly the policewomen talked about their job and demonstrated how to handcuff someone using Ms Storey as a test subject, which captivated and provided the children with a memorable learning experience! One Year 5 pupil was particularly inspired by them and said: “My favourite part was when the police officers talked about their everyday life; I used to think they sat in a car and ate donuts all day! I want to become a police officer one day and help people too.”

The successful event gave pupils an opportunity to explore a wide range of careers. Children engaged in interactive sessions with each professional throughout the day, and learnt about the value of each profession. They gained useful practical knowledge including how to stop bleeding and when to apply a tourniquet. This particular piece of advice stuck with one of our Year 6 pupils who shared: “I want to be a doctor when I’m older so I really enjoyed listening to the paramedics talking about their jobs. Thanks to the paramedic, I learnt that to stop bleeding you have to put pressure on the wounded area and to raise the wound above the heart if possible.”

Most importantly, the day opened doors and challenged assumptions. It showed everyone that careers are limitless, regardless of gender, age or race. Ms Sarah Storey said: “The career day helped to break down barriers and address misconceptions that children had about police officers; it was lovely to see the children laughing and joking whilst learning about the role of a constable and feeling confident to ask questions and advice. A child asked 'could we have a career day every year?' and now this is something we are planning to build and expand on for future years.”

Headteacher Helen Khinich said: “Career Day is invaluable in helping children envision and aspire to their potential career paths. By interacting with professionals from diverse fields, our pupils gain inspiration and understanding that goes beyond the classroom.”

Many thanks to Ms Storey for contacting her sisters, PC Storey and paramedic Ness Storey, and daughter PC Shaw to arrange their attendance. We are grateful for all the professionals who made our first Career Day a success and left our pupils feeling inspired.
