Mathematics

At Kilburn Grange School we deliver an inspiring and engaging maths curriculum through high-quality teaching. Our pupils are at the heart of all we do and we are committed to ensuring that all children feel successful in the study of mathematics.

We take a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics, which means that we ensure pupils have mastered key concepts before proceeding to the next topic; at the same time, we ensure that challenge is provided for all children, whatever their understanding, in order to reach their full potential.

In Reception, we use the Early Years Development Matters scheme of work, whilst we move on to The White Rose scheme of work across Years 1-6. The White Rose scheme enables children to become independent, reflective thinkers; it also nurtures skills that not only encourage success in maths, but also support them across the curriculum.

 We strive to develop courageous mathematicians, who savour the challenge of maths. Children should not be afraid to get things wrong and should fully embrace mistakes as a part of the learning experience. Together, we are developing a whole new philosophy of understanding, building confidence and developing competence in maths: a philosophy that generates resilient, confident learning and real progress. Despite the diverse starting points of our children, we help all pupils to achieve excellence.

We really want to get children excited about maths. Our staff promotes children’s enjoyment of maths by providing opportunities for them to build a conceptual understanding of maths before applying their knowledge to everyday problems and challenges.
